Description

Most of what is known about the incidence of type 1 diabetes (T1D) in children and adolescents is derived from registries in high-income countries. Across many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, primary incidence data remain scarce or absent, and current estimates rely largely on modelling and extrapolation from other settings.
The Global Collaborative for Changing Diabetes in Children (GC-CDiC), led by the Health Systems Innovation Lab at Harvard University, is addressing this critical evidence gap by generating primary clinical data on children and adolescents with T1D across an expanding network of LMICs, in close collaboration with local researchers. This session will present the GC-CDiC Global Incidence Study and its first results, including new incidence estimates derived from primary data collected in countries where previously published primary incidence data have been limited or unavailable. The session will also introduce the Collaborative, describe the development of the global cohort and its methodology, and discuss how these new data can strengthen the evidence base for understanding the global burden of childhood T1D and inform future research and planning.

LUNCHTIME Symposia & workshops

Symposia organised by Dexcom

Thursday 5 November, 14:00-15:15, Session Hall 3

Moderator:

Pablo Mora, MD, Adjunct associate professor, Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism, Endocrinologist, Medical City Dallas

Speakers:

Anita Swamy, MD, Medical Director and Program Co-director, Chicago Children’s Diabetes Center at La Rabida Children’s Hospital; Attending Physician, Endocrinology, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (Endocrinology), Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

Daniel DeSalvo, MD, Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine, Pediatric Endocrinologist at Texas Children’s Hospital, Director of Strategic Collaboration at Texas Children’s Diabetes and Endocrine Care Center

Description:

Advances in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and automated insulin delivery (AID) have transformed the management of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents. This session will review current evidence supporting early technology adoption, discuss evolving professional society recommendations, and explore practical strategies for integrating CGM and AID into pediatric diabetes care. Participants will examine considerations for technology implementation, patient and caregiver education, and maintaining technology use through key transitions in care. The program will also highlight how Dexcom CGM features such as remote monitoring and customizable alerts can support diabetes management. By the end of the session, attendees will be able to summarize current evidence for early CGM and AID use, discuss guideline-based approaches to technology adoption, and identify practical strategies to support successful implementation and ongoing engagement in pediatric populations.
